I thought this course taught me a lot of different ways that I can teach literacy in a Physical Education setting. It is kind of hard to do in a lot of situations since it is still a PE class but it can be done. One of the things that I think I liked the most about this course was how it was so different than the "traditional" class of lecture, exam, lecture, and exam. This style that we had in our class clearly shows how we can be different teachers and capture the attention of our students.

Reading in Physical Education?
Is it possible to use texts in the Physical Education setting?

Growing up I do not recall using texts for any of my PE classes. However, I do believe that it is something that we are able to incorporate as PE teachers. I believe that reading is a skill that should be used a lot more in PE... that means it should be used once in a while. Going from never using text to using it once in awhile would be considered a lot more. I think it is okay to give students homework in a PE class. They get homework in every other class so why do we never have homework in PE?
I would propose that in my PE class I would have each student read any text that has to do with physical education or being active and summarize that article in a one half page paper due every other Friday. That is only two times per month and at the same time hopefully the students may find an article that could spark an interest in some type of physical activity.
This idea would not be to turn students away from my PE class but rather, it would be to help stimulate the minds of those students in my class that may not know what PE is really all about.

My whole life connected to Physical Education
Even though I grew up on a farm in little ole Honeyville, Utah does not mean that I spent most of my time playing with tractors or saying, "Ya'll". I have been surrounded by physical activity my entire life, as long as I can remember my dad has had season tickets to the Utah State University Basketball and Football games. So, my weekends were basically spent watching sports. I grew up playing basketball, baseball, and football. I continued all three of those sports through high school and after that I went to college to play basketball for a Junior College. I am currently on an athletic scholarship for the men's basketball program.
It is easy to see that from the time I could walk I have been surrounded by balls, bats, gloves, hats, mitts, and anything related to sport. Because it has impacted my life so heavily, I am very passionate about being active and enjoying the lifestyle that I have enjoyed until now. I hope to instill the passion about sport and activity that I have into many young children and help battle the current "electronic child", the kids now are so enthralled with video games, computers, and iThis and iThat.
Don't just take my word for it but listen to this fifth grader.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UX68QBzu3Wg

Physical Education Motivation
Future students of class 2022 the time is now for you to sign up to take Physical Education classes here at Mount Lincoln Farmer High School. Why you ask? Five simple reasons...

| Before taking my PE class.... |
- P.E. is the only class in the school in which it is okay to yell during class.
- You will be able to relieve stress in ways that are not possible in any other classroom.
- You will learn good habits for losing weight and/or gaining muscle.
- It is a great place to show off your skills to the secret crush you have in the classroom ;)
- You have the chance to beat the teacher at any sport of your choice!

| Notice the change in stature after my PE class! |
Just by looking at these two pictures it is easy to see how PE is so important in our lives and everything we do. We do not realized how many people are becoming more and more like the 1st picture on this blog, but we know that an easy way to prevent that is to sign up now!
Here is a link to a video that shows what will NOT be doing in my PE class.
We have an awesome PE program in which you the student become the teacher for a week. You will be paired up with one or two other people and you will come up with your own game that you will then teach the class and we will play it!
Thanks for taking the time to look at this Blog about OUR future PE class!

SCED 4200 Introduction! Wahoo!
My name is Cameron Gardner, I grew up in a town called Honeyville, which is only about 25 minutes west of Logan. I have long desired to be a P.E. teacher at the high school level so I could be a basketball coach as well. That is kind of my passion, (basketball) I grew up playing basketball all the time. After my high school basketball career was over I thought my whole basketball career would be over. However, I was recruited to play at a Junior College in California. After 1 year of school there transferred back to Utah to attend Utah State. I joined the Men's Basketball team here at USU and had a lot of fun as a red shirt player here for 1 year. the next year I accepted a full scholarship position to be a student manager for the team and that is what I have been doing for the past 3 years.
I love playing pretty much any sports. I love being active. I love candy, my favorite kind are gummies (i.e. sour patch watermelons, gummy hamburgers, peachies) anything like that is amazing. I enjoy watching movies, hanging out with my wife, which we have been married about 1 and 1/2 years, and hanging out with our dog. I work at Enterprise Rent-A-Car and the Logan River Golf Course when I am not completely busy with the Basketball schedule.
As you can probably tell, my favorite class growing up was always P.E.. Another reason why I would love to be a teacher is because of the hours. I would love to be a family man and be able to spent a lot of quality time with my family. Between the two of those reasons, I think it sums up my reason for becoming a P.E. teacher.
My current definition of Literacy is not only being able to read and write, but also being able to understand. I think we use literacy in many different ways every day of our lives. However, I do not feel like literacy really relates to my content area of P.E..
